Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Todd, owner of Zymology Labs, located in Burlington, VT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help brewers make better beer through analytical testing, consulting, and training. My customers are brewers from small to mid-sized breweries who don't have the time or equipment to run QC tests on their beers and those who are looking for help starting or growing their quality program.

Tell us about yourself

After taking "What's Brewing in Food Science" in college, I realized I wanted to use my chemistry degree to work in beer. After working in the lab of a regional-sized brewery for several years, I took a little break to work in ice cream and soon found myself wanting to get back into the beer world. I didn't want to just work at one brewery anymore though, I wanted to help all the small breweries, who didn't have money to invest in lab equipment, or science background, or any extra labor resources, to have access to the same testing large breweries did.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I first started in beer, I was a student at the American Brewers Guild; now, I've taught several sessions of the lab portion of the course.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having to make all the decisions and determine what's most important to focus on next.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Take all the help anyone is willing to give you! Connect with a tribe of business owners, either in the same field or something else. Make sure to take time away from your business every now and then to take care of yourself and get some rest.
