Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Denise Galay, Owner of Zumba Vancouver, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is called Zumba Vancouver. We are a group of Licensed group fitness instructors that specialize in Zumba® and teach classes all over the Lower Mainland and Online. Our customers/participants are people of all levels who are looking for a fun, energetic workout in disguise.

Tell us about yourself

I started working on my business 15 years ago; I realized the demand for this type of class was bigger than I could do on my own with a small child at home. I also noticed a lack of information and guidance for new instructors in our area. I wanted to create a group of Zumba instructors that I could help/mentor to find new locations to teach, promote classes, and spread the word. In turn, we could motivate and learn from each other!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment would be the growth we have accomplished over the years. Creating an amazing community of participants and a diverse group of instructors that truly feed off each other's energy. My highlights include the large special events and fundraisers we have done as a group effort and creating original retreats in Mexico and B.C.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing would definitely be pivoting to an online platform during the pandemic in a matter of days. We had such incredible and thankful feedback for keeping people moving and connected during that time; it was so worth it. Also, dealing with self-doubt and staying on top of the constant changes in social media and promotions. Having to be on call for anything that comes up that's all part of running your own business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't be afraid to try.
  2. Research or ask for help. There are professionals out there for a reason; if you are new to something in the business, do your research or hire someone to guide you.
  3. Surround yourself with people who love their job as much as you do!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Remember your original vision when you started, and then keep refreshing that vision as you reach your goals.
