We Get the Job Done Right - Zoran Plumbing

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in general services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Zoran Koler, Owner of Zoran Plumbing, located in Etobicoke, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is a small business company specializing in bathroom renovations and plumbing installations. My customers are individuals who require updates or complete bathroom renovations. Many of them discovered me online, while others came through recommendations from my satisfied clients. Additionally, I collaborate with other contractors who engage in house renovations and require plumbing installation services, including new water supply lines, drain pipes, and fixture installations.

Tell us about yourself

I am a licensed plumber and the owner of a small business dedicated to plumbing and bathroom renovations. Prior to becoming a plumber, I worked in the tile installation industry for several years, which provided me with valuable experience to combine with my plumbing skills, enabling me to undertake comprehensive bathroom renovations.

What motivates me to do what I do is not just monetary gain but also the satisfaction of witnessing the happiness and excitement of people due to the work I provide for them. It's a gratifying feeling, particularly when they see the final product. While some individuals undertake bathroom renovations to increase the value of their homes, most often, it is because their existing bathrooms are outdated and in need of rejuvenation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, my most significant achievement is generating substantial revenue while also being able to spend ample time with my family. In comparison to working for a company, I have greater freedom and can determine my own working hours.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the most challenging aspects for business owners, in my opinion, is an unforeseen economic downturn. When a business has been thriving for several years, it is easy to overlook the possibility of a future downturn. However, once there is an abundance of competition and demand for your business declines, it becomes apparent that there isn't enough work available within the same field. Additionally, managing an excessive workload presents its own difficulties, as it becomes challenging to turn down clients in need of assistance. In such cases, hiring additional staff brings about added complications, with more projects, clients, and employees to handle, leading to increased stress.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Here are some tips for individuals aspiring to run their own businesses:

  1. Do not be afraid; start by taking small steps.
  2. Avoid borrowing excessive amounts of money, especially if you are venturing into unfamiliar territory.
  3. Mitigate risks by prioritizing your customers' needs and striving to understand them.
  4. During prosperous periods, focus on building savings since there will inevitably be slow periods in your business.
