Free and Simple File Sharing Just for You - ysendit

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Niklas Weber, Creator of ysendit, located in Waghäusel, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

ysendit is a file sharing service to share files easily using a browser. Upload your files, and you get a link that you can share with your friends, colleagues, and family. The downloaders see a preview of the files and can download them. Design the download page the way you want with your own logo and background. ysendit is used most by freelancers, followed by friends & families, and small businesses.

Tell us about yourself

Hi, I'm Niklas. I study computer science at Karlsruhe. Programming fascinates me since school, and ysendit is one of my larger projects. Over the last year, I've enhanced ysendit to make some practical use of my studies. For example, I built a Mac app based on the React framework.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Just having ysendit help to share files. Almost 12k files have already been shared, downloaded a total of 52k times. Together with all file sharing enthusiasts using ysendit today, I want to make file sharing easier, fairer, and safer.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I see two things here: covering costs and increasing reach. Both belong together for me since a larger number of users increases costs but also profits.

As an Internet service provider, I mainly bear server costs. Initially, those costs were almost 10 times as high as my earnings. By enhancing the caching strategy of ysendit and gaining more users, I now have a good ratio of users to costs.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't be afraid of high initial costs. You can minimize them and maybe find new ways to finance your business.
  2. If you need a break, give it to yourself. Do not fear that your hard-earned clientele will turn their backs on you. Most of them will stay. And if not, you will reach new ones.
  3. Try to get your company known in your field of business. Know your competition and strive to be better in the critical points of those, or use tools like the one from Subkit.
