Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Janessa DeCoste, Founder of Your Nurse Coach, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I work with Canadian nurses who are looking to launch and/or grow their independent nursing practice. As a Holistic Business Nurse Coach, I am able to guide nurses along the process of designing their business through a misleading lens. Along their journey, they have become burnt out and are looking to show up as a nurse in a different way, more in alignment with their values and beliefs.

Tell us about yourself

I am a registered nurse and board-certified nurse coach. I have always been passionate about exploring all of the different ways that we can nurse. After taking a nurse coaching program in the US, I realized that starting my own independent practice as a nurse was what I was meant to do. I have been able to grow a successful nurse coaching and consulting practice and am now using what I have learned on my journey to work with other nurses looking to launch their own practices. I have been fortunate to have also partnered with The Canadian Institute of Integrative Nursing Development & Education Ltd to co-found and create the first holistic nurse and coaching certification program in Canada.

Seeing nurses who are overwhelmed and burnt out wanting to change how they show up and work has truly been eve opening and has motivated me to collaborate with TheCIINDE to create a program that honours their needs as they recalibrate and rediscover the world of nursing.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been those moments in time when working with a client, and they have an ah-ha moment when everything just makes sense; it's in those moments that you remember why you are doing this all in the first place.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The realization is that you must become all things when running your business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. While it's fun to dive into website creation and social media in the beginning, remember that it's important to focus on what brings in revenue. Without paying customers, you have an expensive hobby!
  2. Understand how you help people; when you understand that, clarity follows.
  3. Understand what your core values are, and pay attention to when you feel out of alignment.
