Feel Confident In Your Financial Future - Your Money Bff

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in finance and investment but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lindsey Nellessen, Founder of Your Money BFF, located in New Port Beach, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm the founder of Your Money BFF. I help young professionals in their 20s and 30s grow their money through investing so they can feel confident in their financial future.

Tell us about yourself

After graduating college and starting my professional career, I got REALLY into figuring out how to make passive income. I researched EVERYTHING from blogging to drop shipping. After years of trial and error, I finally found investing - the only true method of passive income I've found to this day. I helped several friends and coworkers learn how to invest, but after getting laid off in 2020, I decided it was time to share my passion with the world, and Your Money BFF was born.

A lot of people think that when they work with me, they'll learn how to invest. While that is true, investing is only possible and safe with a strong financial foundation. I LOVE getting to help people build that foundation. I really believe money is not one of the most important things in the world - but if you don't have much, it's really hard to think about anything else. I believe if I can help people worry less about money, they can bring more of their best selves to the other, more important things in life. I think the world deserves more of that, and that's what keeps me going.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishments are always my clients' accomplishments. One that came to mind was when I worked with a 24-year-old who had recently begun her professional career. She grew up in a family that she said knew nothing about money, and she wanted to learn how to invest and how to best use the money she was making at her new job. Through our work together, she was able to pay off her debt and start investing, AND she was so excited about it that she taught her four siblings how to invest, too. I love this because it shows how one person can truly make an impact on an entire family and future generations. It only takes one person to change the entire trajectory of a family!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It's lonely! I'm an extrovert. Being a digital entrepreneur, it's just me building the business. There's a lot of work I do besides talking to clients - building my courses, managing payments, creating social media posts, and the list goes on! Not having other people around to talk to about what's going on can get really lonely. That's why I love working with other entrepreneurs, so we can share what we learn with each other and hold each other accountable for what we say we'll do!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It takes more money than you think to start and run a business, so make sure you have an emergency fund and don't quit your day job at first.
  2. Don't build something and wait for people to come. Talk to people about what they actually want, then build the thing they want.
  3. Get help. Coaches and courses will help you do things 10x faster and better than if you had tried to DIY everything.
