Modern Mental Health Counseling - Your Journey Through

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mary Beth Somich, Owner of Your Journey Through, located in Raleigh, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Your Journey Through is a private practice providing mental health counseling services to individuals, couples, and families, from a modern and relatable lens. Our clients come to us because they are struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, difficult transitions, and family dynamic stress.

Tell us about yourself

I grew up in a very small, rural town with little to no mental health services available within an hour's radius. I witnessed the impact this had on both an individual and community level around me. I became interested primarily in family dynamic work with teens and young adults and was motivated to help them navigate challenging times, set boundaries, and reach their full potential. I'm motivated each day by the relationship I have with my clients and the intrinsic reward I receive from watching them grow, heal, and flourish.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting my business from the ground up, on my own. I taught myself how to be an entrepreneur and have grown Your Journey Through into a group practice with multiple locations. I have also expanded into a podcast, a blog, and developed courses for other therapists seeking to grow and market themselves in modern ways (instagrowthfortherapists.com).

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Time management is always difficult for a business owner and entrepreneur. People view entrepreneurship as more flexible than your typical 9-5 job, and it is, however, there are fewer boundaries when it comes to time, and it includes late nights and early mornings sometimes. As time goes on, and with outsourcing and systems in place, I have thankfully been able to take a few steps back to achieve a greater work-life balance.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't wait. So many entrepreneurs wish they had started earlier.
  2. It's ok to start small and even stay small if that's what you want. You don't have to give in to the pressure to keep growing, and growing, and growing. Could I have a team of 30 therapists in my practice right now? Sure. But I love the smaller boutique office vibe (there are 4 of us currently), and that's what feels right at the moment.
  3. Invest in yourself by establishing systems that will make things easier for you — including outsourcing. You are only one person, and when you outsource, you are able to really focus on your areas of expertise, which is a greater service to everyone.
