Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marina Arshavskiy, Owner of Your ELearning World, located in Baltimore, MD, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I own an eLearning business. I work with three types of customers - those who want to become instructional designers or eLearning freelancers, those who are looking for a provider to help them create professional eLearning courses, and eLearning organizations that need articles, white papers, etc. to market their eLearning firms/organizations.
Tell us about yourself
I am a multi-award-winning eLearning professional with more than 15 years of experience in instructional design, eLearning, and course creation. I am the author of the Instructional Design for ELearning book and developed several programs that help new and transitioning instructional designers get into the field and succeed. Throughout my career, I've worked with over 100 companies, organizations, and government agencies to help them design and develop successful performance-oriented eLearning solutions. Recently, I received the Top 100 leaders in education award. My motivation is to help my clients create transformational, instructional, sound courses. I don't want to be another course creator or course consultant who builds useless courses and promises success. My goal is to help people acquire new knowledge and skills and gain confidence through engaging and result-oriented learning experiences.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I wrote a highly successful Instructional Design for ELearning book that has been used by multiple colleges and universities. I've also developed a companion program for the book that has already helped thousands of new and transitioning instructional designers build new careers in eLearning and land exciting job opportunities.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Learning to delegate and saying no to clients and opportunities. Now that I'm 15 years into my business, I can be selective with the projects and clients I work with. I want to enjoy my work and be proud of the business I built.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Building a successful business takes time, so be patient! Be strategic and develop a business plan. Lastly, you don't have to reinvent the wheel. There have been others who already build successful businesses, so work with them, learn from them, and follow their path.
