What's your business, and who are your customers?

We connect people to their families and communities by helping them understand how to use DNA test results to learn more about themselves and their family tree.

Tell us about yourself

Thanks to the advice of my high school English teacher, when I got to college, I found a professor who was researching something I was interested in and got involved. That first research project turned into the DNA testing industry that is so successful today. After working for a testing company for several years, I saw the need for DNA education and started my own business.

As for what motivates me? I love that moment when a client tells me they finally understood DNA for the first time. That confidence led them to implement the things they had learned, and they were able to find that ancestor they had been looking for.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think actually one of my biggest accomplishments is being able to provide a place for some very talented women to work that is challenging, meaningful, and flexible within their other responsibilities as mothers or caregivers.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

All the decisions!! Yikes! There are many days when I just want someone else to decide all the things that need to be decided. It can be exhausting.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Work is good enough. Don't spend so much time perfecting your message or product; just get out there and start talking about it. You can always improve it over time.
  2. Talk and talk and talk to your target audience. That's the only way to truly find out what they need from you and how they talk about the problems you want to help them solve.
  3. You are enough. Your message is worth it! Don't waste time in indecision and insecurity.
