Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan Sweet, Founder and CEO of Your 3 Eyes, located in Alameda, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Your3Eyes is an education consulting firm. We work with school districts, county offices of education, and leaders to design and develop strategic plans. We also support leaders in implementing those plans through executive coaching and on-the-ground support.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Dr. Megan Sweet; I am an author and systems-thinker who has been in education for more than twenty-five years. I've been a teacher, school administrator, and school district leader and currently serve as an elected member of her local school board.

I also have a Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership, and my academic and professional interests rest mainly on how to create effective change in educational contexts. I am also passionate about meditation, mindfulness, and the power of love to heal our world, and I am an internationally recognized leader of mindfulness in education.

I believe that when we approach educating our youth from the inside out by building a supportive and heart-centered connection with ourselves first, we have the confidence and resilience to tackle the important work of transforming our educational settings. I share my unique approach to school change in my book, An Educator's Guide for Using Your 3 Eyes.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishment was codifying my academic and professional understanding of school change and mindfulness into a replicable business model that is aligned. Through outreach and professional presentations, a school district in Memphis, Tennessee, now provides my book to every incoming educator and has developed its own professional development curriculum aligned with it.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner for me is finding new business. When your business is small, you need to do almost everything, including things that you may not be good at. I am much more comfortable with the idea and design side of the business, so sales can be challenging for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know with as much specificity as you can what business you want to create, and research other models of like-businesses. See if there is a competition that may prevent you from having enough clients.
  2. Invest in a coach (or develop a group of trusted friends) who can help you to refine your business model, help you to gain clarity about your WHY, and support you when you're starting out.
  3. Be in love with what you do! Your passion translates into how people experience and feel about your business. While a money-maker might be appealing, if your heart is not in it, it'll show and will likely prevent you from the success you envision.
