Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Selby Hill, Founder of Yonder Yoga, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Yonder Yoga is a hot yoga studio that focuses on movement and breath-based yoga. We bring a high energy, upbeat music, and dynamic sequencing to offer a powerful and challenging class. At Yonder, anyone can be a customer - the beautiful thing about yoga is if you're breathing, you're doing yoga, so we have everyone from former professional athletes to musicians to moms to teenagers walk in our doors.
Tell us about yourself
Yoga got me through a difficult time - the combination of breath work and movement eased my anxiety instantly. As a former collegiate athlete, I loved the challenge of the practice and how the growth never ends. There's always some new pose to try or a way to get stronger in a transition. I started Yonder to create a place where I could share what I'd uncovered with everyone else. With a background in teaching high school English, I love that in business, I still get to teach and lead but in an even greater way.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Growing a business from 1 studio to 5 and 15 employees to 110 in three years. I feel like we've developed an incredible team that is the greatest reason for our success. I love bringing together different personalities and showing them how to use their experiences to inspire others.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Knowing that I can never please everyone has been a hard thing for me to learn. Not everyone loves hot yoga, not everyone loves our style, and not everyone loves Yonder. As a leader, I always want to be respected and appreciated, but the reality is, it's a business, and it's what we wanted to create - sometimes that doesn't align with other people's visions, and I have to be ok with that and instead focus on the ones that do love us.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Do it - even when your best friend tells you you're crazy (been there), or it feels like your chances are 1 in 1,000, do it. In this life, you have to bet on yourself to succeed, so make the plan, comb over it a thousand times, and then chase it. It's worth it.
