Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Yolanta Meri, located in Peterborough, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an evidential medium and psychic. Through readings, I connect people to their Loved Ones in Spirit. In this way, my clients can better understand that we are eternal beings and that their Loved Ones are still with them and love them. This helps them in their grieving process as well as dispelling their own fears surrounding their mortality.

Tell us about yourself

It runs in the family! Fortunately for me, my grandmother and great-grandmother were deeply spiritual and connected with each other side. They both spent a lot of time talking to me about seeing and talking to Spirit. This was funny to me because they were very Catholic, but seeing Spirit or getting messages from Spirit was so natural and normal they never questioned that or the church. Their connection and willingness to talk to me about it helped me tremendously when I had my own experiences.

As an adult, I took part in some development courses for mediumship and intuitive work. The healing and relief my clients feel when they connect to their Loved Ones drive me every day. It's so beautiful hearing how transformative this knowing of our continued connection is.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Moving to video chat! They are much more fun than telephone readings because they allow the face-to-face feel of in-person readings but are accessible to people regardless of where they live. This format also made readings possible for people who have tighter schedules and would not have been able to easily make it out to an in-person session.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me was coming out of 'the broom closet.' While it was common knowledge that I liked the paranormal, I met with some resistance and skepticism around my mediumship and intuitive practice. I actually had some people stop speaking to me because of this.

I had similar experiences when I began following more nature-based spiritual practices. Through this, I have learned the importance of knowing who you are and how amazing it feels when you no longer need to hide yourself. Change can feel scary and sometimes sad, but when you trust your intuition and lead with love, better people, places, and situations will show up for you.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Self-care! Your ability to serve your clients only gets better when you look after your needs first. So get the rest, drink the water, take a nap, and get on that vacation!
  2. Set healthy boundaries. While it falls under self-care, it still deserves a spot of its own. Set-out firm times and dates when you are working or are accessible to clients and your vendors. It is fun to 'go above and beyond for your clients, but with healthy boundaries of your accessibility and your service limits, you can feel joyful to give more. Otherwise, you will end up feeling resentful and used.
  3. Heal your traumas. If you have been told your whole life that you are not good enough, it is going to show in your ability to succeed. Digging deep into your soul and finding your hurts, and learning what each needs to heal will make you and your business better. Counseling, therapy, journalling, energy healing, etc., is so beneficial. It really is the magic sauce.
