Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Claudia Steinhauser, founder of Sundara Yoga Teacher Training Brighton and Hove, located in Brighton, United Kingdom.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

It is a yoga teacher training that inspires to adapt yoga to a modern body and aims to explore and understand this ancient wisdom with modern science and psychology. It's not so much about body shapes but how to shape our lives. In this training, you not only dive deep into yourself, but you receive the tools to empower yourself and others to live your life fully. With self-inquiry and sensibility to sensations, you can discern better and live life more content.

In this training, you will learn how to create the space to remember who you were before conditioning, and culture made you hold your body in unnatural ways or your mind limiting your progress. Although we move and learn to create shapes and movements that heal us, it is not about shapes.

Tell us about yourself

I just needed more. I realized early on that to live life fully required some inner work. We can very quickly be put into a box and become robots. We follow what society tells us to do and get so busy that we get too tired to break out of those chains. I always believed that there was more to discover as a child, and it was not taught in a school. Once you connect with yourself and accept your true self, it feels very liberating, and it does not matter where you are and what happens to you as much as it would have been before.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I put so much love and effort into it and keep updating the Yoga Teacher Training manual, workbook, and the many presentations I designed. I was so lucky to have met so many nice and inspiring people around the world, living in many lovely places.

When living in Southern Spain, I was interviewed by local TV in the Alcázar about my life and business and what brought me from the UK, India, and Thailand. I applied for business support for women and wrote my business proposal, and was selected.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The pandemic has been a huge challenge for so many people. Another challenge is that bigger businesses and people with money take everything over, so to keep something authentic requires huge willpower and determination.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Collaborate with other people or your community.
  2. Specialize in a niche and be not afraid to narrow this niche down.
  3. Best to stay in the same area and build up or expand from there.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Be kind and supportive to small business owners. Don't let society tell you are too old to do something!
