What's your business, and who are your customers?

I coach passionate high school rowers and help them get recruited to their dream college rowing program.

Tell us about yourself

I started rowing when I turned 13 after I realized that becoming a professional tennis player would require the tennis courts to be made longer at the baseline by at least 10 feet. I won Olympic gold and silver in the Men’s single scull. I got recruited to Brown University, where we stayed undefeated in the varsity 8. As a junior, I set an indoor rowing world record on the Concept2 rowing machine. I never feel that any of my coaching sessions are the same. This makes it entertaining to me. I help de-stress high school rowers and their families since improving rowing performance comes easier with the right coaching.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have been the most successful high school rowing coach since 2003. My pupils get recruited to the top collegiate rowing programs in the United States.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part as a business owner is to triangulate your niche market. A great friend helped me look out of my trench and understand the business situation!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Use your specific skill and be creative with it. Have fun with it. Keep going. Necessity is the mother of innovation. Persevere!
