Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Darren Wurz, Owner of Wurz Financial Services, located in Covington, KY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Wurz Financial Services. My customers are attorneys, law firm owners, and business owners. I help my clients grow wealth and achieve financial independence. Services we provide include investment management, retirement planning, and tax planning.

Tell us about yourself

My dad was a financial advisor, so I followed in his footsteps after a short career in education. I taught 8th and 9th-grade science for five years but got burned out and sought something different. I love my job now. I love that as a business owner. I get to exercise my creativity in building the business I want to serve the clients I want to serve.

What motivates me is seeing my clients progress toward their financial goals as their companies grow and as their portfolios grow. It is very rewarding to be a part of their journey. I am also very motivated by the growth of my own business. As I acquire new clients, the business becomes more profitable.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been publishing my book, "The Lawyer Millionaire," by the American Bar Association. The book is a comprehensive guide for attorneys and business owners to help them make the most optimal financial decisions at each stage of their lives to achieve financial independence as quickly as possible.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is managing your cash flow cycle and being disciplined with savings and investing. As a business owner, it is easy to neglect to put money away for retirement, and it is easy to let the "feast or famine" of the cash flow cycle get the best of you.

Yes, selling your business may one day be part of your retirement strategy. But you shouldn't rely solely on that. And time is the most valuable asset you have. So business owners must keep putting money into their 401ks and investment accounts even if money is tight.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Keep your personal and business financials separate. This is so critical to running a successful business.
  2. Pay yourself a regular salary. The business income may go up and down, but you can instill some regularity in your personal financial life by paying yourself a steady paycheck.
  3. Don't take money out of your retirement accounts, and do not neglect to save for retirement.
