Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melissa Webb, Founder of Write On! Webb, located in Murrieta, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Write On! Webb is an online academic writing platform and encouraging community designed for homeschooling families with children in 3rd-8th grade.

Tell us about yourself

With three decades of teaching experience, an award-winning curriculum I've designed, and a simplified writing system, Write On! Webb was born.

Homeschooling is becoming an easier option for many families, but that does not mean homeschooling is easy. As an Educational Facilitator for 15 years supporting homeschooling families, I saw firsthand that parents found academic essay instruction overwhelming. Writing happens to be my favorite subject to teach. After publishing my first children's book in 2019 and working with hundreds of students using the program I created, I knew starting a business was inevitable. What I had to offer was needed, and I'm SO glad I did!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I stepped into an entrepreneurial space after 25 years as a classroom teacher and homeschooling mom. Despite the discomfort, I knew I could solve the problems and frustrations with which homeschool moms struggled.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are so many responsibilities! I've never worn so many hats.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Listen to your clientele. What you want to create may not be what they'd be willing to purchase. Surveys are great.
  2. Grow an email list ASAP. Offer a wonderful freebie in exchange for an email address. My best conversations happen via email versus DMs on any social platform.
  3. Be patient and resilient. Growing a business takes time and discipline. Focus on one wonderful client at a time. It's not about the masses. It's about that one person you can help today.
