Making Things Easier - Wright Touch Marketing & Consulting

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jen VanEe, Owner of Wright Touch Marketing & Consulting, located in Grand Rapids, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Wright Touch is a consultancy focused on organizational change with a human-centered focus. I help businesses and teams operate more strategically and confidently while making sure they have the systems and processes in place to sustain long-term growth. Too often, there is a communication breakdown between business leaders, the teams they lead, and the customers they serve.

We're seeing a fundamental shift happening right now in the country as it pertains to work. People are leaving their jobs at record-setting rates. This isn't something new; we're just finally seeing people act on the things that they've been thinking for years. While there are a lot of reasons this is happening, it all loops back to communication issues at the organizational level. Most organizations either don't have a strategy at all, or they have one, but it's not shared throughout the organization. People need to be able to see themselves in the organization's growth strategy. They need to know how their role fits into the organization's big picture.

Tell us about yourself

I'm passionate about making things easier for people. I have a big mouth, and I'm not afraid to speak up if I think something could be done more efficiently or produce better results. I started working for myself because I had worked in just about every environment (family-owned, partner-run, corporate, and owner-operator), and they all had issues. Many of those issues center around people because, at the end of the day, almost every issue in a business comes back to people. I think now more than ever; it's crucial that businesses put people at the center of all their decisions, whether those people are their employees or customers. I believe that people deserve more options of great places to work, and that's what motivates me to do what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Actually taking the leap to do it. As a very motivated and goal-oriented person, the first few months (more than a few, if I'm being honest) were really tough. Going from being the breadwinner of our household to having no income was very difficult. But I'm proud of myself for sticking with it because I just solidified a contract that is going to get me back in the ballpark of my previous earning potential.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Always feeling like you could be doing more. It's hard to be satisfied or feel like you're doing a good job sometimes, but it's largely just because there aren't enough hours in the day to do things the way you should be for your business as well as perform the work you need to for your clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Build out your strategy, business plan, and content prior to going to market.
  2. Start reaching out to those in your network to start creating a buzz.
  3. Be ready to set your pride to the side.
