Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in home care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melissa Wright, Founder of Wright Design Co., located in Charlotte, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a (mostly residential) interior design firm helping our clients build, renovate, furnish and move into their homes. Whether they're moving, building a new home, renovating an existing space, or just need help with a refresh, we help them manage every detail of their project from start to finish, even putting bedding on and installing wallpaper.

Tell us about yourself

I got my undergraduate degree in interior design and have been working in the industry ever since. I worked in all kinds of different creative spaces and fields within interior design for the past 15 years until I finally opened my own interior design firm in 2015. I love so many different aspects of what I do, including getting to help people curate such personal, meaningful spaces. By the end of each project, we grow to treat our clients as dear friends!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think any business owner has experienced success simply in starting up a new business! I look back at the past seven years and can see how much our business has grown and how far we've come, and it is a huge accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think it's tough to constantly juggle all the various roles required of a business owner and have to learn those skills in real-time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find the things you love doing and are good at and the things that only you can do, and keep doing those things. Everything else can be outsourced.
  2. Never stop learning or growing, even when you're tired and it's uncomfortable to read books about small businesses, join industry networking groups, use your business to volunteer and connect with charities you are passionate about, etc.
  3. Give yourself credit; take the time to stop and see how far you've come. Success is defined in so many ways, but even something as small as keeping the lights on is a success for a small business!
