Rising Through Obstacles, One Day at a Time - Worsham El
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Worsham El, CEO of Lotus Trauma Care, located in Chicago, IL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Lotus Trauma Care is a trauma therapy and training practice promoting post-traumatic resiliency and trauma-informed care. We provide therapy to people who have experienced trauma in their childhood or adulthood and train the professionals who work with people who have experienced trauma.
Tell us about yourself
I am a healer, licensed therapist, certified family trauma professional, and trauma-sensitive yoga facilitator. I was called into this work at the age of 13 following my experiences of complex trauma in childhood. I promote healing by educating clients, community members, and professionals about the impact of trauma on human functioning, behavior, and development. I am motivated by my love for humanity.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I believe my biggest accomplishment has been maintaining the integrity of our mission to provide affordable, quality services despite the recession, pandemic, and industry challenges. I remain committed to running a socially responsible organization that is healthy for the staff and promotes empowerment in those we serve.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing for me is to balance my decisions with my heart and head. I am naturally a very compassionate and considerate person sometimes, it can complicate the decision-making process. I have learned to delegate where I can and how to be mindful of how much of my heart to place into business-related decisions.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
My top three tips are to first be flexible with yourself and the process. The day-to-day demands of running a business are both liberating and stressful. Secondly, invest in outsourcing where you can so that you can free your time for the things you enjoy most and do the best. It will alleviate a lot of stress and assist in getting further quicker. Lastly, celebrate your wins regularly. So much is required when you are running a business that it is easy to lose sight of your progress, effort, impact, and journey.
