Accessible Language Education - World Linguistics

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kyle Mathis, Owner of World Linguistics, located in Germantown, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is World Linguistics. It is an education company headquartered in Maryland, USA. My business offers a variety of educational services, including Spanish-language tutoring and Spanish conversation practice classes. Our clientele is mostly from Washington, D.C. metro area; however, we are gradually expanding into other markets. I also produce free educational videos for a global audience, which are uploaded to YouTube.

Tell us about yourself

What got me first working on my business was when COVID-19 hit the United States in 2020. When that happened, I started focusing more on my studies. At the time, I was taking an education 101 course, and I was reading my textbook about how the United States uses a decentralized funding system for its public schools, which means that the federal government only contributes 10% towards public education, while the states and local government each contribute roughly 45% give or take.

I became fascinated by this and started to fantasize about all the ways I could potentially solve this problem and create quality language education for people who didn't have access to it, so I started a YouTube channel, and from there, my business expanded into offering paid services..

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is watching my business take off from the ground up after putting in a lot of work to build everything from scratch. I loved every step of the process, and I'm so glad I didn't give up, even though there were many times when I felt like quitting.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is the stress resulting from the setbacks and challenging relationships, whether that's business partners, suppliers, or other stakeholders. As a business owner, you are the one who's responsible for so many critical relationships that factor into whether or not your business will be successful.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take calculated risks instead of taking heavy risks that may ultimately cause your business to crumble.
  2. Work hard from day one and hold your vision close to your heart. You have to know why you're doing what you're doing and have an end goal in mind.
  3. Value your education, whether that's formal, self-help, or a mix of both. Despite what many say, I know many business owners who have gone to school to get a college degree and are happy they made that decision.
