What's your business, and who are your customers?
Workplace Wingmen is a career accelerator aimed at helping recent graduates, rising executives, entrepreneurs, and cross-cultural professionals navigate today's competitive workplace.
Tell us about yourself
I started my career in corporate communications and public relations. I spent 30+ years helping executives at brand-name companies, advertising agencies, and innovative startups tell their stories. I've been thrilled to create a second career teaching communications skills to a new generation of professionals who need to be able to write and speak clearly and effectively. I'm currently an adjunct faculty member at Baruch/CUNY and Mandl College and a corporate trainer, offering business writing and public speaking workshops online and in person.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishments are the vicarious thrills I get when one of my students aces a job interview and gets the offer they dreamed about. When someone I coached who was terrified of speaking in front of a group received a standing ovation at a business conference.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, it's managing my time effectively and learning to prioritize. I tend to focus on current clients instead of developing new leads
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Do your research and see if your idea is viable. Write a business plan -- there are plenty of guides to help with this critical step -- and network, network, network!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Have a few friends and colleagues you trust who are willing to bounce ideas around with you, give you advice and tell you when you're heading in the wrong direction. In my case, it's my husband and two very smart girlfriends!
