What's your business, and who are your customers?

Woon is a Homestyle Chinese Restaurant featuring Mama Fong's original recipes. Our customers range from young creatives to young families to older couples who appreciate modern Chinese food.

Tell us about yourself

I worked for a number of years in apparel marketing within the skate and surf industries. After years of creating stories for others, I decided it was time to focus on my own authentic story of my mom's food and my Asian American identity. Woon was born out of this reflection and is essentially a representation of my upbringing and the current crossroads of being an Asian American.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think it's the simple fact that we have made it this far and have been in business for almost 4 years. It's a bonus that we get to be a community hub for people and share our stories with strangers. It's also still mind-blowing to me that we employ people's livelihoods.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The endless decision-making and the endless amounts of stress and worry :)

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Expect to work extremely hard and a lot.
  2. Focus on solving problems and preventing them in the future...don't focus on the problem.
  3. Be prepared to multi-task and work efficiently.
