Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gwen Welk Workman, founder, and owner of Wooden Spoon, located in Plano, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a Scandinavian shop and Cultural Center. Our customers come from all over the USA. We have a store which is located in the oldest home in Plano, (built-in 1867 and historically designated). It is filled with gifts and food from the Scandinavian countries. We also teach the languages and the arts. We host meeting for the Sons of Norway, Finnish American Society, and others, private parties and events, and guide students when studying another country.
Tell us about yourself
I move to Texas from Minnesota. I was raised in a Scandinavian community, so I had lived my life as one. Moving to Texas was a cultural shock, and I could not find anything about my culture. In the fall, I went to the State Fair and found a Viking ship and the Norwegian Society of Texas. This inspired me to open a shop.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Providing a meeting place for all Scandinavians or others who are interested in meeting and sharing. To help people be connected to their culture and to teach others.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Financing.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Get your financing first.
- Get a plan but be flexible.
- Have a passion and work hard.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Keep dreaming and finding more ways to help others. I have a cooky ministry, and it has been one of the most wonderful things anyone can do.
