Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Bryana Gregory, an educational and motivational speaker, women’s wellness coach, and pharmacist based in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As a speaker and coach, I work specifically with high-achieving, overwhelmed women, helping them heal their bodies from the inside out. High-achieving women carry a heavy load of responsibility on their shoulders, which often leads to overwhelm. Overwhelming then leads to illness, fatigue, and a less-than-optimal quality of life. We are often prescribed medications to manage these symptoms, but we don’t get better because they don’t fix the problem. They only mask the symptoms. This is why I use an entire body approach to healing by focusing on rebalancing and replenishing rather than overmedicating. I’m here to help women take back control of their lives and redirect the trajectory of their wellness. I work with groups of women, individuals, and organizations to educate and empower them to become the healthiest, most balanced, and most abundant versions of themselves. As an actively practicing pharmacist, I bring a unique and dichotomous approach to healing, focusing on the root cause of overwhelm and illness rather than overmedicating. My primary topics of focus are: squashing the cycle of overwhelm, gut health, detoxification, healing without overmedicating, inflammation, and managing anxiety and stress. Organizations and groups that benefit from learning more about these topics are those actively looking to refine the health, mindset, and productivity of their employees for a happier and more abundant workplace. Regardless of the setting, my passion lies in educating women on how to implement intentional habits for a healthier, balanced lifestyle. My clients are high-achieving women who are looking to restore health and balance in their lives and squash the cycle of overwhelm. These women may be stay-at-home moms, CEOs, teachers, breadwinners, medical professionals, etc. Any woman who is serious about healing her body, regaining her energy, and unleashing the most abundant version of herself is my ideal client.

Tell us about yourself

I was a victim of the conventional medical system approach. In my early twenties, I became very sick and was exposed to the overmedicating ways of the conventional medical system. Rather than doctors focusing on the root cause of my sickness (which ended up being a bacterial infection in my gut), they wanted to perform open heart surgery and prescribe me narcotics as well as pain medication based on the symptoms I was having. What?!?! I knew that I deserved better, and I know others do too. Unfortunately, I’m not alone here. Many of my clients have been through the same rollercoaster of treatment approaches, none of which seem to help. Prescribing medications that simply cover up the symptoms does NOT fix the problem. Instead, identifying the root cause of illness and fixing it is where healing begins. My goal is to encourage every woman to prioritize and actively take charge of her own health. This includes physical, mental, and spiritual health because all of the body’s systems are connected, which means that we cannot segregate any one part of the body from the other as we heal it. High-achieving women, especially, aren’t great at prioritizing their health with the busy lifestyles they lead. This is where I serve as a coach to focus on the importance of eliminating sources of overwhelm, making healthier choices, and establishing lasting balance in life. This is crucial not only to a woman’s success but also to her happiness. I get it because I’ve been there – this is why I’m dedicated to helping women live out their happiest, healthiest, most abundant, and balanced lifestyles. We all deserve this!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Allowing myself to adapt along the way. When I first started my business, I had big ideas. I still do, but they are more focused and more intentional now. So they feel bite-sized rather than daunting. Learning different ways to grow my business and understanding what feels natural to ME was crucial for growth. I prefer in-person interaction because of my ability to engage others. Nothing replaces in-person interaction and communication, in my opinion. Know your skills well and use them. As Romans 12:6-8 implies, we all have different gifts, according to the grace given to us. Use those gifts positively.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Learning when to “shut ‘er down.” I coach women on how to un-overwhelm themselves and live a more balanced, healthy, and fulfilling lifestyle. Yet, I still get overwhelmed. An important key to success is understanding that overwhelms is a cycle. If we can get ahead of it to manage it, we will be successful. It is crucial to know your limits, know when to put in the extra hours, when to shut off the phone and email, and know when and how to relax in a way that energizes you. This is how I stay in my growth trajectory. Prioritize filling your own cup first, then do so for others. Not only is this attractive, but it’s also productive.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be sure to niche down your offering. When I first started my coaching business, I wanted to coach men and women on how to achieve balance and a healthier lifestyle. My offering was too complex for my audience, so I got lost in the sea of coaches out there. This was overwhelming. So, I decided to start coaching high-achieving overwhelmed women like myself because I have a lot of experience in identifying my sources of overwhelm, squashing them, and bringing balance and joy into my everyday life. This is when I identified my niche of working only with high-achieving, overwhelmed women. About a week later is when I acquired my first client! Your business should be based on something in which you have expertise. Refrain from starting a business without a niche.
  2. Make sure people know you exist! I believe most businesses should have a website to drive business. Most of the world does business online these days. Create a free lead generation tool for your website that helps you build your contact list. For example, mine is “5 Steps to Squash Overwhelm and Start Living Your Most Balanced Life, Today”. Then you can share your content with this list by sending your blog, newsletters, seminars, etc., when they sign up to receive this lead generation tool. Not only will this grow your following, but it will help with client acquisition and drive potential clients to your website.
  3. Lose the attachment to perfection. Give yourself grace because not all your choices will be perfect, nor will the content – especially as you’re getting started. This is especially true once you start hiring others to develop or post content for you. Also, if using social media to build out your business, understand that raw posts are better than planned, and original is better than perfect. Your preferences around what you desire from your business will also change, so give yourself some grace.
