Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lucy Kovalova, Owner of WKG Strategy, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a strategist and fractional CMO. I help startups, SMEs, and solopreneurs with complex, research-based marketing, go-to-market strategy development, and processes set up for execution. I had the pleasure of working with various customers from all around the world, helping them convert their idea, dream, or hobby into profitable businesses.
Tell us about yourself
When I was around 11, that was the first time I looked around at how businesses work locally (a mid-size town in western Ukraine) and thought - 'that's not how things suppose to work.' That was a revelation, and the world has never been the same since. This was when I decided that I wanted more - more from life, more from the surrounding. It took me years of learning - language, business, various industries, and entry-level positions, then years in the advertisement, some international projects in education, IT, etc. 2015 is when everything changed - after the revolution.
Many business owners left the country, I've lost my then full- time job, and this is when I also signed the contract for my first book. The same year I decided that I wanted more flexibility and started working on my own consulting business. Since then, I've published eight books on business and personal development, worked with customers from all continents, and now looking forward to helping more businesses and solopreneurs locally in Calgary, AB, Canada, that become a home for me.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I've fulfilled my dream of working internationally, I've reached millions with my books and that podcast we host with my husband, Jim Woods. It's such a pleasure getting all the thank you notes for our motivational and consulting work.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The beginning is the hardest. I think, for many, the hardest is also to take responsibility. When you work solo or own a business, you are responsible for the final results.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do your homework - do the research, and don't go into the market blindly.
- Hire, delegate, outsource.
- Analyze and keep an eye on market trends.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I know sometimes it feels hard and even lonely once you're getting closer to your success, but if you have the capability to deliver a good product or service, share the knowledge and help others - you must do it. Do it for yourself first
you deserve it.
