Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with the florist, Caroline Oxberry, owner of Nomad Floral Styling in Sunderland, UK.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a florist who likes to steer away from the traditional. I like my work to be imperfectly perfect!
What motivates you each day?
I started during COVID. I was out of work (beauty therapist) and had had a baby in lockdown. I needed to focus on something for myself. I love flowers, homewares, and interiors. I started putting together some dried flower bunches, and I bought in some pots and vases. It slowly took off, and I loved working with flowers that much; I decided I needed to expand my knowledge and got a local florist job.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Every day is hectic, and I am constantly being kept on my toes. As a small business owner, you have to juggle absolutely everything to do with your business, so the day-to-day running in itself is my biggest accomplishment.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I'm not very organized. I must do better! Trying to keep on top of everything is difficult. Being in 3 different places at once is pretty hard!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Be clear on your goal. Set yourself targets. Get organized!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Although running a business can be hard at times, it's the best thing I've ever done. Who knows what the future will bring.
