An Ecological Approach to Wellness - Wit and Reason
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alexis Moreno, founder of Wit and Reason, located in Washington, DC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Our mental health telehealth and consultation services are provided by mental health professionals with education and clinical experience in behavioral and social science. We excel in the art of teaching, building relationship skills, and empowering our private, workplace, and media clients with enhanced self & social- awareness. We share our passion for both the arts and science with our clients and use our analytical, creative brains to work for improving mental health and wellness.
Tell us about yourself
I am passionate about the interplay between mass media communications, culture, & personal factors. Which explains my academic pursuits. I have a Doctorate in Community Clinical Psychology, a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy, and a Bachelor of Science in both Television Broadcasting and Psychology. The more time I spend studying psychological theory, researching human behavior, and working in the community, the more I am inspired by the power of systematically addressing personal and social issues.
I have worked as a health educator with middle and high school students, provided psychotherapy with children, families, and couples recovering from violence and trauma, and treated adults on parole and in maximum security psychiatric hospitals suffering from severe mental illness. Spending the last decade teaching and addressing every topic and crisis imaginable has made corporate consultation and media communications a breeze. I used an ecological and biopsychosocial approach to every case conceptualization. I collaboratively worked with teams in a respectful, humanistic style. Passionate about working with diverse clientele, I tailor my interventions and presentations to engage and meet the needs of every stakeholder involved.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Expanding mental health from individual therapy sessions to impactful skill-based community workshops, news interviews, television and radio talk shows, and online video and audio lessons. Making mental health accessible and relatable for the masses has been a lifelong career aspiration. Now, through my company, I get to create mental health content to benefit everyone.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Educating the public about the diverse services and benefits psychologists and mental health professionals have to offer. Many still associate mental health with its origins in psychoanalytic talk therapy. So, I'm tasked with first increasing consumer awareness and understanding that mental health professionals are an asset to every industry and excel in providing a variety of services.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Approach entrepreneurship with humility. Recognize your area of expertise and what is out of your scope of competency. It is impossible for anyone person to know all. So, get ready to be a lifelong learner. Research, attend educational events, consult, collaborate, and build a multifaceted professional network.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Starting, running, and growing a business can take a toll on every aspect of your wellness. Recognize that every problem does have an emotional impact. Allow yourself to emotionally process each challenge along with problem-solving. This practice will truly benefit your ability to maintain longevity in this marathon.
