Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Paula Youmell, Founder of Wise Woman Nurse®, located in Potsdam, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Interestingly I have three businesses rolled into one:
- Sacred Circle Mentorship™ where I teach Women to come back into their Divine Inner Wisdom to navigate life from a space of peace and calm.
- Herbal Skin Care Products: this started with my Voluptuous V ointment for Women's intimate care and morphed into a facial lotion, 40+ FaceFix for over 40 and Sun Kissed skin (used by many much younger than 40), a Skin Soothe healing ointment, and a Prostate Health Ointment, Peaceful P.
- Functional Medicine RN consults to support people working to self-heal.
Tell us about yourself
I have been working on my business all my life, gathering wisdom from many teachers. I went fully into it when my kids were younger, and I wanted to spend more time at home with them as opposed to public school teaching or hospital nursing work. I suspect I was a little naive about how much time it takes to be the sole person running a business. I keep on doing what I do because I love to see the spark of "ah-ha" in people's eyes when they 'get it' and venture down their path of healing, whatever their path looks like for them. It is also very satisfying to get little notes of love from customers who are happy with my skincare products.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Happiness, myself, and my clients/students/customers. Being in my own joy and knowing I have contributed to others' joy: priceless sacred heart work.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Doing it ALL. I could use an admin assistant, an accountant, a tech person, etc. I literally do everything, including packing and shipping, web editing, etc. I have a partner in the VV product, Shelby Connelly of Five Elements Living. Having her at my back, front, and sides is a gift.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Get support where needed and not just business support.
- Be prepared to work hard.
- Love what you do. This sounds so cliché, but it is true. Love carries one through a lot of challenges.
