Open. Smell. Enjoy. - Windsor Hills Candle Co.

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lori Barrow, owner of Windsor Hills Candle Co., located in Paris, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Windsor Hills Candles. My customers enjoy more than just your average candle that you can purchase at a big box store. Our tagline is Open, Smell, Enjoy, and that motto goes for our Everyday Container Candles and Wax Melts, as well as our custom pieces. If the quality and scent are not there for a customer, they will walk by. I'm constantly on the lookout for local artisans to partner with and offer new product lines such as our Wooden Collection, Earthenware Collection, and Stoneware Collection. I want your candle to be just as unique as you are!

Tell us about yourself

I started as a Candlemaker in 2011. I was a stay-at-home mom to my three kids and was looking for a hobby. I created my first, unfortunately, colored, green honeysuckle candle, and I was hooked. I learned how to make candles from the Internet and books I read, and plenty of candle testing ensued. I'm motivated to keep pressing forward with my business because no matter what life throws at me, I keep getting up and finding that creative passion for pushing through the hardships.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was transitioning from a home business to a brick-and-mortar store in 2014, then having the courage to realize that it was the wrong course of action for me.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

When you lean heavily into the creative side of things, sometimes the "business" side needs more attention and study. I had to teach myself so much about running a business that it wasn't just about making pretty candles and calling it a day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My first tip is to make sure that you understand the legalities of the business that you are in. My second tip is to have a good system to keep your books or a great accountant. My third tip is to believe in yourself and persevere.
