Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tony Nelson, Co-Owner and Director of Sales of Wildcat Distilling Co., located in Duncombe, IA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an Iowa farm distillery that produces small-batch craft spirits. Our customers are anyone that enjoys unique spirits that are produced from locally grown and sourced products.

Tell us about yourself

Wildcat Distilling Co. is a family-owned distillery that produces spirits from grains that are grown right on our farm. We appreciate fine spirits and noticed there was a demand in the market for craft whiskies and spirits. With one of our partners being a farmer, the jump to using those grains to produce whiskey seemed like a natural next step. We love what we do and enjoy coming up with new products to share with our friends and customers.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building a distillery company from the ground up, completely by ourselves. We've also built a brand that is really building some momentum. It's always a thrill when I introduce myself to someone new, and they know our brand and our products.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Every day is an adventure. You never know what challenge is going to be thrown at you. But I would say the biggest challenge has been getting exposure in a crowded market. We make some really great and unique spirits, and getting in front of people and sharing those products has been a top priority for us. We are opening a tasting room in Webster City very soon, so we are looking forward to sharing our story and products with people in a very fun space.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research and know what you are getting yourself into.
  2. Produce the products that you want to make, don't chase what you think customers want.
  3. The timing, money, and/or situation will never be perfect - just go for it!
