Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Phil Graves, CEO of Wild Idea Buffalo Company, located in Rapid City, SD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Wild Idea Buffalo Company offers grass-fed, grass-finished, and field-harvested bison. Our mission is to regenerate the prairie grasslands while improving our environment and our food supply by bringing back the buffalo.

Tell us about yourself

Bison are a keystone species that are essential to building healthy grassland ecosystems. I have long admired these iconic animals and am honored to play a small part in returning buffalo to their historic range.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Showing that animal-based proteins, when raised responsibly, can be the best option for the planet.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Our company is vertically integrated from pasture to package. Balancing our supply of grass-fed buffalo meat with customer demand can sometimes be difficult.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire people smarter than you.
  2. Do not cut corners when building a sustainable supply chain.
  3. Work in an industry that you're passionate about.
