Free-Spirited Botanical Cocktails - Wild Folk
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in non-alcoholic beverages but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dalia Kohen, founder of Wild Folk, a line of all-natural botanical beverages located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I have created a fashionable, convenient, all-natural beverage line, bringing botanicals from our heritage into flavorful modern expression. Wild Folk is a canned, free-spirited cocktail (non-alcoholic) full of roots, rinds, herbs, and botanicals.
Foraged with compassion, blended with care, and encouraging all to embrace the human spirit in a playful and uplifting way. These beverages are for drinkers and non-drinkers alike.
Tell us about yourself
I started The Coup Vegetarian restaurant 17 years ago and sold it two years ago. I love creating unique flavor combinations and wowing tastebuds. I first began to play with non-alcoholic flavor combinations at the Coup bar. When selling, I took these recipes with me, worked on them for a year, and am now canning.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
15 years of owning and running a restaurant. I started when vegetarianism was not a trend in Calgary. I spent many long hours and had much success. Fifteen years in one location and in the restaurant industry is a lifetime.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I would have to say valuing your time and understanding the line between your business and yourself. You work so hard to succeed and put all of your passion and heart in, but often don't have enough downtime with your family and friends. Keeping a healthy balance is key.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Reach out to mentors and bring people to the team who share the same vision. Don't try to do it all yourself. There is so much support out there and other business owners who want to see your success - ask for help and guidance. Finding the community of support early on can make a significant difference.
