Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alison Tierney, Founder of Wholesome LLC., located in Oconomowoc, WI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Wholesome LLC empowers individuals who seek to reduce their cancer and/or disease risk and live their own Wholesome life with plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine.

Tell us about yourself

I'm Alison Tierney - a board-certified oncology dietitian, PCOS & infertility warrior, cancer survivor, and all-around nutrition nerd. I empower others to live their wholesome lives with plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine. I believe life is far too short to miss out on time with the people you love the most, travel to those destinations you've been dreaming of, and squeeze out every drop of life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, my biggest accomplishment is impacting far more lives than I could have in my traditional clinical role. My business reach has spread far beyond my local community to internationally. On top of this, it has created a flexible work/life juggle (I don't believe in proper "balance") while my husband and I raise our young family. I have opportunities to be part of my daughters' lives that I wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity for.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a business owner and oncology dietitian, I struggle with how to impact more individual lives while reducing the financial burden for individuals and families who want/need access to health-promoting information. We all deserve access to the knowledge and information necessary to transform our lives, but a business requires financial support to advance its critical mission.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals with similar goals and values. Provide support to those individuals, and seek help in return. Together, you can accomplish big things.
  2. Understand your why - your reason for creating your own business. It will be what continues to push you forward, even when it gets tricky.
  3. Create a business fueled on passion, not just something that can financially support you.
