The Whole & Healthy - WholenessByMona

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mona Rasi, founder of WholenessByMona, located in Vaughan, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

WholenessByMona is about living a wholesome life every single day. It's a platform to inspire open and willing people to get closer to their "Whole Self." Through this vessel, I've committed to sharing my expertise to help health-overwhelmed people take care of their physical, mental, and emotional well-being and make that a priority.

My clients, just like my old self, are tired of putting a band-aid on their symptoms, taking medications, and never getting lasting results on their health journey.

In my nutrition consultation practice, I help people with digestive issues and blood sugar problems to get to the root cause of their cravings and symptoms. I help them have more energy, improved mood, more joy, better sleep, glowing skin, and automatic weight loss. All these happen as a result of digging deeper and reprogramming an old mindset while taking small, consistent steps towards building new constructive habits.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a Certified Holistic Nutritionist and Nutrition Writer from Ontario, Canada. I immigrated to Canada from Iran in 2014 with my family. Following undergraduate studies in business economics in Iran, I studied as a Certified Nutritional Practitioner (CNP) at the Institute of Holistic Nutrition. I became a member of the Canadian Association of Natural Nutrition Practitioners (CANNP). My prior experience in the integrative health industry includes retail sales of nutritional supplements as well as working in a natural compounding pharmacy and integrative medical clinic.

My business was birthed from my own struggles with gut problems that I've overcome by 90% through targeted nutritional and herbal supplements and holistic diet and lifestyle changes. Instead of trial and error and playing a guessing game or relying on pharmaceutical medications, I decided to find a way to support those around me who needed accountability on their path to feeling good about themselves.

I have recently merged my two passions which are using food as medicine and nutrition writing, together and pivoted my business path a little. This allows me to run a 100% web-based business on my own terms. In addition to nutritional consultations, as a freelance nutrition writer, I work with health food and supplement companies and wellness business owners by writing well-researched, easy-to-read articles of different lengths for their websites.

What motivates me to keep building my business is to help more and more people who are relying on media outlets as their resources to find solutions for their health concerns. I absolutely love what I do and believe that life for me is service.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Coming to a place of acceptance and detachment has taught me a lot. Since I started building my own business, I have grown so much personally, and I think no other life experience could offer me this gift. My biggest accomplishment (an ongoing process) is standing up against my imposter syndrome and fears. I no longer believe the untrue stories that my mind sometimes tells me, and this empowers me to support both my nutrition and writing clients in the most authentic way possible.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As someone who is teaching people to be mindful of their own body's signals and circadian rhythm, I myself sometimes find it hard to prioritize tasks correctly and find a balance between productive working days and optimal rest. It's important to discipline myself to get work done but not to the point that self-care is neglected.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be prepared to grow with your business, as it can be one of the most important aspects of your own self-improvement.
  2. Have in mind that it's ok to take it slowly and not all days are going to look bright.
  3. Failing is your best teacher, don't be scared of being rejected or having to pivot a couple of times.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I'm grateful for choosing to jump off the cliff and getting comfortable with not knowing. Taking this big step keeps leading me toward the wholesome life I always dreamt of living. I thank you for the opportunity to reflect back on what I have overcome and accomplished over the past four years.
