Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shelley Whitehouse-Nilvi, Owner of Whitehouse Psychotherapy, located in Richmond Hill, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Registered Psychotherapist. And I work with clients from 10 years of age and above generally.
Tell us about yourself
I became a therapist in 2018, realizing that this career was really the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life working in. I absolutely love my job, and when you love what you do this much, it just doesn't feel like work. Engaging with my clients each day in each session motivates me to continue to pursue more and more education and information to assist in their healing journey.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I can honestly say that when my clients provide feedback on how the impact of our work together has significantly improved their lives, that makes my heart feel warm and helps me know that all of my goals and intentions in helping them are being achieved. My client's accomplishments become my biggest accomplishments.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
In this career, it's probably self-care. Setting boundaries for myself and limiting the amount of time I work. I want to help as much as I can, and when you do a job you love, it's easy to overwork and become burnt out.
I take this area seriously, though, and focus on taking good care of myself so I can show up as my best self for my clients.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be passionate about what you want to do.
- Educate yourself well.
- Delegate tasks outside your expertise to other experts in those areas, for example, bookkeeping, accounting, business maintenance, etc.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I think that going into a career or business that you love and have passion for is the biggest gift you can give yourself and your prospective customers or clients. You progress, build and achieve so well when you love what you do.
