Hope, Respect, and Love - White Rose Candle Co.
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Elyse DiNome, owner of White Rose Candle Co., located in Hillsdale, NJ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a small candle company based in Hillsdale, NJ. We aim to make candles that not only smell amazing but are affordable. Our candles are handmade in small batches with 100% soy wax and paraben and phthalate-free fragrances! We offer custom labels for all occasions and bulk orders as well, which are great for baby showers, wedding favors, and birthdays - the possibilities are endless! Our goal is to bring people together by conveying a strong and deep message of hope, respect, and love. Whether that be through a gift or just a scent that reminds you of a special moment. We are here for you!
Tell us about yourself
In May 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, my grandmother lost her battle with dementia. I knew that one of her favorite flowers was a white rose, and not only did I get it tattooed on me, but I named this company after it. By branding my products with this name in this company, I aim to bring the sense of love and support that she gave me into your homes.
Candles are our light at the end of the tunnel. They are able to transform small spaces into beach houses, bakeries, and so much more with the light of a wick. We tend to light them to calm ourselves or relax after a long day, and they are the product of a lifetime.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I’m just under a year, and we have been able to connect with hundreds of people across the country and continue to grow every day. Our biggest accomplishment so far is being in 2 local stores!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things for me as a new business owner is time management. Not only do I own White Rose Candle Co., but I also have a full-time job in software, am a landlord, and am a group fitness instructor. It is hard to find the time some days to focus solely on my business, but as time goes on, it gets easier. I know my situation is unique, and it gets complicated, but I just keep pushing forward.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- START. So many people say they will do it or have an amazing idea but don’t step out of their comfort zone to actually start it. You never know; taking the step to start may change your life.
- Don’t overwork yourself. It can be easy to be hard on yourself if you don’t focus on your business one day, but it is okay to take a break!
- Don’t be afraid to outsource. I noticed photography isn’t my greatest strong suit and is very time-consuming, so I finally outsourced my product photos, and it was a game-changer!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Just do it. Don’t wait for the right time because there will always be some excuse why it isn’t the best time. You can do it!
