Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ian McMartin, co-owner of Whiprsnapr Brewing Co., located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Small family-owned craft brewery. We create unique, super fun style-bending beers in small batches. We've released over 150 unique beers in the last two years alone! We are a hidden gem in an industrial complex, with a cozy taproom, great team, and incredibly loyal customers.
Tell us about yourself
Coming from High-Tech, which is notorious for its ups and downs, I wanted to do something where I had more control. Beer and brewing were something I enjoyed, the physical aspect of the work, but especially the creative side - which continues to motivate me today. I got into it to build a business, be creative, and create a warm and friendly space where people could come together, be social, and enjoy a few pints.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Still being in business despite the pandemic.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Working with partners. When it's new, it's fun and exciting, but work eventually needs to get done, and you need to be 110% aligned. We've been sole owners now for two years, yes it's more work and responsibility, but it's been so much better.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Funding. Plan for what you need, then double/triple it.
- Choose who you're working with wisely, then get it in writing who's doing what and specific expectations.
- Engage with the community!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Work hard, have fun.
