What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an Independent Voice Teacher and Vocal Coach. My clients range from ages 8 years old to adults, from beginners to professionals.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a teacher for over 45 years, both in voice and piano. I come from a very musical family on my father's side, and they have very little training. My grandfather used to write songs without reading a note of music. Legend has it that one of his songs was published, but he had to sell his song for money during the depression. I am a retired professional voice performer, and my teachers encouraged me to start teaching voice and piano since I loved to teach and share my knowledge.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When my students get the leads or win competitions that they try out for. Also, earning respect and being recommended by my colleagues.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think wearing all different hats, from administrative work to marketing on social media, and staying on top of it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Set up your studio policy and stick to it.
  2. Listen to your students and do less talking in a lesson.
  3. Don't be afraid to ask questions and be open to advice.
