Take Your First Step Toward Healing - Wendy Leung
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Wendy Leung, a Registered Acupuncturist based in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
As a Registered Acupuncturist and Holistic Wellness Consultant, I help my clients to better understand and take charge of their own health and recover naturally from a variety of ailments, including digestive, gynecological, mental-emotional, pain, and injury. My clients are predominantly busy professionals, so stress management, nutrition, and self-care are big parts of my practice!
Tell us about yourself
I started working in holistic healthcare to make a difference in peoples' lives in a tangible, personal way. I, myself, was a busy, stressed-out professional, and I wanted a career change that would both be gratifying and a change of pace.
Now, not only do I get to help where my clients have often found no other relief, but I can also empower them to understand their bodies better and teach them concrete tools and practices to support their health and wellness going forward.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I consider every client's success a big accomplishment! No matter how many clients I see, however big or small the recovery, I love helping people get unstuck! When my clients restore balance to their health, they get more time and energy to help others in turn.
Also, having cultivated a YouTube channel with over 200K views, I can empower and educate people all over the world about the power of holistic healing and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
While I savour the flexibility that comes from working for myself, the hardest thing about being a business owner and entrepreneur is balancing work and my personal health, life, and family. While it's tempting to overwork to keep the business thriving (the Yang pushing energy), I've found that the best flow often happens after taking time away (the Yin allowing energy)!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Set and maintain your business boundaries. As healthcare practitioners, we naturally want to support others, so it can be tempting to accommodate clients' needs over our own. By setting aligned boundaries (regular working hours, appointment start/end times, fees, cancellation/refund policies, etc.), you demonstrate that you value your own time and energy, and clients will respect you in turn.
- Track your budget meticulously. Know how much you're investing in and profiting from your business, so you know when you need to make an adjustment.
- Be patient, persistent, and flexible. Running a business is not for everyone. If you're aligned with what you do, have the dedication to stick with it, and are willing to do/learn/try whatever it takes, you can be successful.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Mentors and like-minded peers are invaluable: You don't know what you don't know, and having community connections to support you as you build and grow your business can help you immensely. Don't be afraid to reach out!
