Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Justin Currie, Certified Senior Care Manager of WellSprings Home Care Ltd., located in Downingtown, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We provide non-medical home care services for seniors and those with disabilities. Our clients are those that want to remain independent at home for as long as possible but are struggling with the activities of daily living. These include things like dressing, toileting, bathing, and personal hygiene care. Our goal is to keep our clients at home where they are most comfortable.

Tell us about yourself

I worked in the oil and gas industry in Calgary, Canada, for most of my life. I had a financially rewarding and very successful inspection business, but unfortunately, there wasn't much for personal reward. Getting into home care was a no-brainer for me; the industry is one of the fastest growing on the planet. I get to help seniors, and I still get to satisfy my love of business. My motivation comes from my passion for helping others, my passion for business, and my pursuit of buying my time back to spend with my family.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say it has to be branching out on my own in an entirely new industry and a new country. In my previous business, I had a very experienced mentor and 50/50 partner, which made things much easier. My oil and gas business was in Canada, and I moved to the US to be with my fiancé and get a start in the healthcare industry. Growing my business from the ground to 1 Million in billable hours in the first year in a new country is what I most take pride in.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is to learn that winter is always coming. You go through seasons in your business, some are good, and some are bad, but you will have to fight through many winters to come through on the other side. By winter, I mean a major loss of revenue, pandemic, overreaching government regulations, and other situations out of your control. But summer always shows up!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start NOW! There is no perfect time.
  2. Think of money like a game; you were given money to play with and make things happen. Simply saving money is a great way to run out of retirement income when you are older. Now some should be saved, but this should not be your ticket to wealth.
  3. Get a coach/mentor - Someone who has been there before can save you time and money. The investment seems like a lot, but what you make back is tenfold.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Sacrifice and be patient for multiple years while growing your business; most people can't do that.
