Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lauren Hacker, Founder of Wellness First Clinic, located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Naturopathic Doctor working with health-conscious women to optimize their health and fertility. I offer individual appointments and will soon offer a course on naturally improving fertility. I specialize in women's hormones and fertility, digestive health, and autoimmune/chronic disease. I typically work with two types of patients: women who want to achieve a healthy, natural pregnancy and also women who feel drained, feel like their health is holding them back, or they are being told by their doctor that their labs are normal and everything is fine - even though they know something is off. Together, we do detective work and combine natural therapies with cutting-edge science to create lasting results.

Tell us about yourself

I wear a lot of hats and stay busy. I have been a Naturopathic Doctor and solopreneur for four years and additionally work as adjunct faculty for a university and as a medical writer - digging into science and studies daily. My focus on women's hormonal and digestive health evolved naturally in alignment with my passion for improving women's health so that they could own their care, get results, and embrace their lives more fully. Fertility care was a natural progression for me because naturopathic medicine is great at getting to the root cause of unexplained fertility, helps patients conceive naturally, and, if needed, improves the chances of IVF success. Working with patients to achieve their health goals is inspiring to me and keeps me motivated daily.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My answer is two-part. The first is that I feel a sense of accomplishment whenever a patient feels heard, empowered, educated, and sees positive shifts in their health that feel sustainable and give them a sense of optimism. The second will be the launch of my fertility course - a curriculum I am currently working on to help guide women through the best basics that improve their chances of natural conception - which will be available next spring. A lot of time and care is going into the course, and I am excited to share it!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, it has been a continual learning process coupled with the ups and downs of a pandemic that started shortly after I started my practice/business. I didn't have a background in business, so every year has had different challenges that required flexibility, creativity, and tenacity in my response.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus on the customer. Your business should be about their journey, not about you.
  2. Figure out your systems early on and continue to improve them as you go.
  3. Books and communities can provide a great starting point for support and ideas. Be aware of your team and whose advice you take on your business - they should reflect who you want to be and the business you want to create.
