Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in consultancy but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Suzanne Malausky, Founder of WeInspire Talent Solutions, located in Canonsburg, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

WeInspire Talent Solutions is a boutique HR consultancy specializing in talent strategy (how to attract and retain the best employees) and Executive Coaching (helping motivated leaders connect with and activate their strengths for greater success). I am also an Everything DiSC distributor (I help companies use and apply the magic of communication style assessments).

If you dare, think of me as a corporate Mary Poppins. I come in with my carpet bag of wonderful resources to help organizations, teams, and individuals learn and shape up. You will find my approach a nearly perfect combination of practicality, creativity, and prowess. Spit Spot!

Tell us about yourself

I set a goal early in my career when I was schlepping to the inner city every day - a 55-mile commute each way. That goal was to ensure that I gained the right experience, invested in the right areas of expertise, and built the right network to break away and start my own consulting company when the time was right.

I am very goal-oriented and motivated by having work variety. I found that working for the same company for too long was a personal buzz kill. Now, I get up every day with a sense of newness. I meet new people.
I face new challenges. I help others solve their unique problems. I am successful because I bring each client's best part of every past experience to the table.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Twice in my career, I resigned from a full-time position and managed to negotiate a consulting contract with my employer to continue doing the work. In these cases and others, I've been proud of the trusting relationships I have built and the quality of work I deliver.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things to manage personally as a business owner is a feeling of isolation. The buck stops and starts with you, and it can be difficult to self-motivate when the work feels unfulfilling. But just like any goal, you stop and stake stalk of why you are running your own business. You'll be reminded that the benefits far outweigh the bad days or moments of discomfort. I work hard to ensure that I am getting enough socialization throughout the week to keep my energy up.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus. You can't do it all, but you can do enough. Resist the urge to take on any job or work that is not part of your vision.
  2. Stay Humble. Be confident in what you provide and be open to continue learning and building on your expertise.
  3. Don't Let it Consume You. Remember that you probably chose to open a business to improve your quality of life. So, be sure you are loving and living life now.
