Tell us about yourself
Having over 17 years of experience in corporate accounting and the finance world. Just like many others nowadays, I was laid off from my corporate position as they were moving everything to another state. My dreams and the mindset I grew up with were completely crushed. Going to school, getting a degree, landing a good job, and then retiring from that job was my plan. When I was told I was getting laid off, my mind automatically went to how did I end up here. How is it that from one day to another, someone can dictate my future, my income, and my way of living and take me out of my comfort zone with no hesitation? That's when I decided that no more depending on someone else whether I was going to have a job or not. I still went back to another corporate job; I had no other choice. Since I was a little girl, I remember always liking numbers, calculators, and money and wanted to have my own accounting firm. Those memories came back, and I was like, WHY NOT? Let's give it a try. What do I have to lose? And just like that, I created a website and registered my business while still in a 9-5. The struggle has been real these past four years, but my motivation each and every day to continue and push myself and not to give up is my two beautiful kids, knowing I no longer have to commute an hour to work, knowing that I don't have to report to anyone, or ask for permission to take the day off or leave early because one of my kids is sick. Knowing that I wake up every day and I plan how my day is going to go, I choose where I want to work and what time I want to work, and being able to be more present for my kids is motivation enough to keep pushing every day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would say my biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been taking the leap of faith and going for it, and not fearing the unknown. But also the connections I have made along the way.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing about being a business owner for me has been learning to run a business. Knowing how to do the work that you are an expert on is not going to cut it. As a business owner, you wear all the hats and have to learn things that you had no idea you needed for your business. I went from crunching numbers to now also being my business content creator, amongst many, many other roles.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Here are three tips I would give to anyone looking to start a business:
- Be very clear on WHY you want to start a business.
- Networking and connecting with other like-minded people will help you.
- Don't ignore your business finances.
