Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kimberly Tran, owner of Wagon Wicks, located in Grand Prairie, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I own a small candle business known as Wagon Wicks. Due to the lack of Asian representation in the candle industry, my scents are Asian-inspired with a modern, simplistic twist. I love sharing my culture with others. Therefore these unique candle scents are perfect for those who are willing to be open to trying new scents.
Tell us about yourself
I've always loved candles and crafting but did not start my journey until I had to make 300 wax melts for my sister's wedding. The love and support I got from attending guests gave me the confidence to continue my journey. At the end of the day, family is everything to me and is a major reason behind what motivates me.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
One of my biggest accomplishments is building a community. The use of social media has given me so many opportunities that I've never imagined for my small business.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The toughest challenge as a small business owner is managing my time. I'm more than just an entrepreneur. I am a Uni student pursuing a biology degree and a medical assistant. There are many days where in I am overwhelmed by all my responsibilities due to not following the schedules I create. However, this challenge has taught me discipline.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Believe in yourself, and become comfortable with being uncomfortable. Some days you will be discouraged and extremely frustrated when certain things don't go the way you envision your small business to go. It's easier to be said than done but staying consistent will take you a long way with the knowledge you'll gain and the success you'll achieve.
