Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in recruitment but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Matthew Wallack, CEO of W Talent Group, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

W Talent Group was founded in 2018 as a premier recruitment firm for accountants in public accounting, entertainment accounting, and family office firms. We match job seekers with high-quality, professional clients to develop and enhance their professional goals.

Tell us about yourself

I've been in the recruitment business for 17 years. It was a career I found after being in sales roles after college. I was fortunate to be trained by some of the best professionals in the business, and I developed a passion for my work. I consider it a great success and motivational when I place job seekers in positions that change their lives and make a momentous impact on them, their families, and their future.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I decided to open my own firm, I was nervous about how my first few months would develop. I was fortunate enough to have solid relationships with all my clients, and they followed me to my new firm. My biggest accomplishment in those early days was turning a profit after only three months.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a business owner, you have to consider that every move you make will have positive and negative outcomes. Like a chess player, you need to think five moves in advance and be prepared to overcome any obstacles that might thwart your plans. Being nimble and visualizing success is crucial to business owners and can be hard at times when things don't seem to be going your way.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Always be the most organized person you know. Organization is key to running a successful business.
  2. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, but be afraid of making the same mistake twice. I wouldn't be in the position I am in now if I didn't make many mistakes over the years, but I learned from each mistake I made and have changed my approach.
  3. Know your competitors and what your unique value proposition is. I like to differentiate myself from other recruiters by making it a point not to send irrelevant resumes to hiring managers and provide white-glove treatment customer service.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

As a new business owner, you need to set aside a certain amount of money in case of economic downturns, such as recessions. I would set up a no-risk savings account and save at least 10% of your income. Always treat your clients like gold because they are. Customer service is crucial and having the right attitude makes all the difference. Never stop learning about your industry - read the latest books and periodicals about what you do professionally. In addition, never be afraid to walk away from a deal if things don't feel right. It might hurt you in the short run, but if you go with your gut feeling, it will lead to less heartache in the long run. Finally, make sure to smile in person and over the phone. Be confident that you have your own business and that you are making a positive impact on people's lives!!
