Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Virginia Hurdon, Founder of Virginia Hurdon Health Coaching, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As an ICF and National Board-certified health and wellness coach and MD, I offer individual and group wellness coaching to physicians and other healthcare professionals who have reached that point in their life and career where they want to improve their quality of life and well-being. So many healthcare providers are struggling! My clients find a better quality of life by examining unhelpful beliefs, shifting mindsets, and taking action on goals that build well-being, self-confidence, joy, and meaning back into life.

Tell us about yourself

Being coached has been an important part of my own wellness journey- so much so that I decided to become a certified professional coach myself! Once that decision was made, it just made sense to want to give back to my colleagues in health care and offer help with their well-being. I'm a retired palliative care physician, so the quality of life has been top of mind for me for years, and that's what I want for my clients. Witnessing mindset breakthroughs and the formation of new healthy habits- the joy that comes from that is such a strong motivator to keep me doing what I do!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Like most Canadian physicians, establishing, running, and marketing a business hasn't come easily to me. I'm also a card-carrying introvert- putting myself out there has been my biggest accomplishment to date.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Developing the drive to reach out and get my business known, and to keep working at it consistently, has been quite a learning curve as a business owner. It's also been a (good) stretch to vision and plans how I'd like my business to grow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First- don't be afraid to start! I was surprised to find just how much online and in-person help there is for someone just starting out. And don't be afraid to ask for referrals when you're going to pay for something.

Second- think like a coach. Envision your business a year, two years from now, as fully and specifically as you can feel it, see it, and taste it! Then work backward to develop tasks and timelines- for example, if you want to achieve X in a year, what do I need to be doing three months from now, a month from now, a week from now? Etc.

Finally, build in time to learn new processes, and delegate what you don't love doing.
