Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rob Scalise, owner of Villiv, located in Las Vegas, NV, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Villiv is a boutique management firm located in Las Vegas that integrates the science of human behavior with modern management and administration practices. We work with management and leadership across industries to save time, money, and resources through improvement or change in their management systems, incentives, or processes.

Tell us about yourself

I hold a master of science degree in Applied Behavior Analysis, with a specialty in behavior systems, and an MBA in Human Resources and Marketing. I’m also a licensed behavior analyst, serving kids and families and training other therapists. I have always been interested in how people and things get from A to B. Watching the coordination, effort, and coming together of such a wide multitude of variables in an organization is a truly awesome thing to see. The collective effort that brings products and services to customers and means of living for employees is a challenging balancing act when making organizational decisions. I consider this challenge extremely motivating and testing my skills.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have successful consulting projects across four different industries, from solving employee relations issues for a tiny chiropractic firm to designing large-scale safety incentives for publicly traded building corporations.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Everyone always talks about the many hats that business owners must wear. I enjoy the variability, but the transition between these many roles becomes difficult, especially when different skill sets are utilized. There is also the constant tug-of-war in decision-making between in-house development or hiring outside help for company assets and development, weighing the benefits of spent time versus spent money.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Most like the idea of being a business owner, but most don’t understand the effort and sacrifice it takes. Get with someone you can trust to get it straight, and think about what that means to your personal life. Most new business owners are worried about money. However, information is the most powerful to grow your business and compete in your market. Take the time to get to know your customers, not what you think they are. Analyze your competition and your market to understand how you can gain an advantage. Things will get busy and messy fast, do yourself a favor and start building out processes and systems to handle the issues as you go so they don’t become recurring themes and a constant fire for you to put out. This is a great way to indirectly influence and establish a positive workplace culture.
