Break Wave Coaching - Vicki Taylor
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Vicki Taylor, Owner and Health Coach of Break Wave Coaching, located in Burlington, VT, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Break Wave Coaching is a health and wellness coaching business that helps busy people develop motivation and skills to create long-lasting change in fitness, health, and wellness. As a coach, my mission is to support my client's goals to live a healthy life by building skills and taking small, manageable actions that lead to big changes.
My clients are diverse. Some clients begin coaching to lose weight or safely integrate a fitness program into their lives. Some are referred to me by medical professionals because of a medical condition they have been diagnosed with. Others are taking preventive care of their health and are eager to age with healthy habits.
Tell us about yourself
I used to work in corporate America and experienced burnout at 33 years old. I made a jump to personal training, where I worked at Equinox in Berkeley, California. Once the pandemic hit, I told myself I would continue my education. I became a certified nutrition coach through Precision Nutrition, which led to my interest in the psychology behind why people change or don't change. I decided to pursue health coaching with a focus on behavior change. Through these positive changes to start a business, I also developed into a coach that walks the talk and lives a healthful life.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is feeling like a safe place for my clients. Whether it's a training session or a coaching call about nutrition, I allow my clients to show up however they need to. Sometimes the stresses of life are overwhelming. It's a gift to me anytime a client says they feel better after a session than when they started.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing for me most recently was relocating across the country and moving my business to a 100% virtual format. It created a lot of challenges at first. However, I'm grateful that my clients "came with me" (virtually) to continue their progress.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Trust yourself, but also reach out to friends/networks for help collaborating and generating ideas.
- Get a business mentor or business coach. Many areas have volunteer business mentors to meet with you regularly and help small businesses be successful. Check out SCORE.
- Get sleep, eat well, and move your body. While this seems like a thing a health coach would say, it's important to take care of yourself!
