Create Stabilization - Vibrant Leasing
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in finance but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brandi Sloan, Property Management Instructor of Vibrant Leasing, located in St. Louis, MO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Vibrant Leasing is an online-based learning program that teaches residential property management to anyone who owns properties or is interested in learning more about this industry.
Tell us about yourself
I got into the industry by chance. 14 years now. It was a struggle in the beginning because I had no experience, which meant I was leaning solely on coworkers to train me in every aspect. The problem with that was everyone who was training me got their training the same way I was getting mine: by whoever thought it was necessary knowledge and education. That wasn't necessarily true. It took years for me to learn and unlearn some things. Also, there was a cultural difference in how I needed to present my knowledge and myself at work, which also proved to be a concern. I found that if I had just had someone to teach me the necessary information and not their opinions, I would have been further along.
This prompted me to want to teach property management from a very candid perspective. I also find that many underserved communities don't even realize how many options they have when it comes to their chosen occupational destination.
They may have heard about real estate but don't understand all of the avenues they can choose from, such as property management. This motivates me further to teach it.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My proudest achievement is being able to sow the seeds of new knowledge in underserved communities.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Everything changes forever! Technology and new generations are arriving. Forever learning and knowing how to constantly reach your customers and keep them interested is my challenge.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Write out a thorough business plan. This is also for you! Not just investors or whomever.
- Your business plan should serve as a constant reminder for you. Many people may not see your vision. This just means it's not for them to understand. Your vision will catch the attention of those for whom it's meant.
- Move at a slow and steady pace. There's such a thing as burning yourself out. Too much of anything isn't good. Don't expect high rewards in the beginning. Make sure you celebrate every achievement, even if it's tiny, because that's one you didn't have prior.
