"Love Your Roots" - VG Hair Care

What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a vegan-based hair care company that caters to women of color. Bringing new ways to combine hair care and self-care creates hair esteem. We stand for our beauty standards to be determined by ourselves and no one else "Love Your Roots" is our motto. We welcome our curly girls that are the researcher, the conscious one, the naturalist, and the product junkies to come and experience the VG Hair Care enhancement to your hair and spirit.
VG Hair Care is a family, woman, and minority-owned brand that is about everything curly. No matter your curl pattern our vegan hair care products will maintain and tamed your curls. While grounding your energy with our affirmations and healing crystals. We are ready for those that are ready to venture on a hair journey that will leave you feeling amazing about who you are.
Tell us about yourself
It was a no-brainer for Danielle and I too decided to start VG Hair Care because of my daughter Noelle. When she was five years old at the time she went through a devastating experience because she developed a bacteria infection of the scalp which in turn caused hair loss and a decline in confidence. So, as a mother, I cut my hair in support of Noelle to assist in the rebuilding of her confidence. That's when Danielle and I formulated our "Tropical Spirit Growth Oil" that was able to grow her hair back in 30 days. The special thing about this story is what the now nine-year-old Noelle said to us about her hair. She told us, "I want to wear my real hair, I love my real hair." It was at that moment we realize how we can be a service to the community.
We knew we had to get up and push forward no matter the no's and turn arounds. We had to tell the story of a beautiful young black Goddess name Noelle, and how she was able to learn from an experience of hair loss that could've hindered her confidence yet made her fall in love with her self-image. That's the true motivation to trust and know that we are successful not because of material but for the fact we can change lives.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our biggest accomplishments were recent ones when we were able to speak at Tech Rodeo and at Leadership Houston. It was an amazing experience to be a part of two major events in that we were able to interact and educate some of Houston's elites. Now we are teaching the elites how to love their roots!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The thing that no one is speaking about is mental health as a business owner. Statistics show that "72% of entrepreneurs suffer from mental health issues" as quoted by Benjamin Lee. This statement is true being a business owner it is difficult sometimes to keep your mental health healthy because of the pressure to perform on highly motivated energy.
The truth is you should become mentally aware of how you feel and your boundaries. In order to proceed at the maximum level that brings you joy, you have to listen to your mind, body, and soul to become balanced to the point you can sense when it's time to take a break and when it's time to push forward. Remember self-care is RESTING!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
